Top Gambler’s Review and Rating:

Admittedly my review of this casino is outdated.  The ownership of this casino has changed hands multiple times.  Originally it was majority owned by the Sault Ste. Marie Chippewa Tribe.  They ran it into bankruptcy.  Which was not surprising.  The gaming floor here is the smallest of Detroit's three casinos since it occupies a previously constructed space previously known as Trappers Alley.  Its location is in the heart of Detroit's Greektown neighborhood (Monroe Street), so property was expensive to come by.  This put it at a competitive disadvantage to the other two Detroit casinos.  At that time it was dirty, smoky and was not a pleasant place to play.  It didn't have its own restaurants.  It had relationship with neighboring properties to use your comps there.  Being in the heart of the city, it did not have the safe feel of the other three casinos.  I was frequently accosted by panhandlers coming and going from the casino.  I accessed through the connecting Athenium Hotel to avoid this problem.

In 2013 it was bought out of bankruptcy by a Dan Gilbert owned entity and latter became part of Gilbert's Jack Casino brand.  Initially Gilbert had plans to invest hundreds of millions into the property, and he definitely put in some money to improve it.  But not to the level necessary to compete with the other two Detroit properties and Caesars Windsor across the Detroit River in Canada.  Apparently Gilbert figured his return on investment was not worth the renovation the property needed.  Under Gilbert's ownership, the property definitely improved, but not to the level necessary to compete in Detroit.  Gilbert's Jack entity then sold it for $1 billion to Vici Properties and it is now being managed by Penn National Gaming.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have not had the opportunity to visit the property and update our review.  We are optimistic that Penn National, who is now a significant player in the gaming industry, will invest heavily in this property.  But this remains to be seen.  Penn National is significantly into the online space, and particularly online sports gaming with its affiliation with Barstool Sports.  We hope that Penn National is not just using this property to get the license to have online gaming in Michigan.  Time will tell.
