Top Gambler’s Review and Rating:

Motor City Casino is one of the three casinos in Detroit, MI.  It stands alone in an area off the Lodge Freeway with virtually nothing around it.  This makes walking from the Motor City Casino to other parts of Detroit not really feasible.  Thus, it is a place where you come, park your car in the garage, and leave in your car.  So, you feel it is kind of an oasis in Detroit.

The Motor City Casino has been owned by Marian Illich, the wife of the deceased Mike Illich who owned the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings.  The Illiches also own Little Caesars Arena and much of the property between the Arena and the Casino.  Supposedly the plan was to develop this property and make walking from the arena to the casino an option.  This has not yet happened.

Our overwhelming observation of Motor City is that it is crowded.  It is always crowded.  They are constantly doing giveaways of various trinkets such as frying pans.  So a visit to the casino usually coincides with most of the patrons walking around with boxes of that day's giveaway.  Apparently this is working because there are so many people.  It is hard sometimes to get a table.

While there are many people, they are not higher end gamers.  So the slot machines and the lower limit tables are packed.  However, the High Limit Room is usually close to empty.  Typically the minimum bet in the High Limit Area is $100 a hand for blackjack.  But here there are frequently tables for $50 or even $25.  So if you come here, play in the High Limit Area where you can avoid the crowd and still you can usually bet below $100 a hand.  While the High Limit Room is relatively small, it does have the best selection of games for a high limit area in Detroit.  It has Blackjack, Roulette, Pai Gow Poker, and Craps.  While we have seen craps tables in other High Limit rooms, we have never seen them open.  Here at Motor City the High Limit Craps table is a huge craps table that is up and running all the time.  This is great!  Usually a craps player is forced to rub elbows in close quarters with other players.  This can be uncomfortable, and spending time with players gambling their last paycheck can be be less than desirable.  One time a player at the regular craps table I was at in Motor City just chose to urinate in his pants rather than leave his spot at the table.  That was my last game at the craps tables outside of the High Limit Room.  The High Limit Slots are also located in the High Limit Room where the minimum bet is $5.  There are some modern machines here.  Usually high limit slots are on older machines at most casinos.

Since Motor City is not operated by a big casino player like MGM down the road, its players club focuses on local comps.  You are not accruing points for stays in Vegas playing at Motor City.  But its club is pretty generous, and, as we said, has many cheap giveaways.  If you want local gaming and local comps, this program is good.

So our view of Motor City is that it is a good local alternative to MGM Detroit.  But if you want Vegas rewards, head to MGM Detroit.
