Roulette is the most iconic casino game. Such a simple concept. One big wheel with multiple numbers that are red or black between 1 and 36 that spins and a ball drops into one of the numbers. Either the ball lands on one of your numbers and you win, or it does not and you lose. Unfortunately, casinos have done everything in their power to complicate this game to the players’ detriment.
The most obvious way to put the odds in the casinos’ favor is the placement of a green zero on the wheel. This gives the casino an advantage on all the 50/50 bets on the wheel (red/black, odd/even. 1-18/19-36), the 33% bets, and the single number bets. With one green zero on the wheel, the 50/50 bets are surprisingly one of the better bets in the casino for player. Unfortunately, most players do not limit themselves to the 50/50 bets, and single zero wheels are getting harder to find.
As we discussed elsewhere on this site, NEVER play a roulette wheel with more than one zero. It just makes no sense given the many other games at the casino with much better odds. And certainly never play a roulette wheel with three zeros. We have seen these at MGM properties where there is a zero, a double zero, and an MGM logo. It is shocking to see players playing these tables right next to tables with one zero or two zeros. When I see this, I want to pass out cards telling people to save themselves and go to www.topgambler.com.
Given that roulette is truly a game of luck with no in-game strategy, we barely play it. When we do, we have some techniques that have worked well for us. Of course for fun we play the kids’ birthdays, but these are bad bets. The strategy that has yet to fail is to play the last number won – playing for a repeater. The odds on the last number being hit again is the same as any other number getting hit. So we always bet the same amount on the last number hit. The advantage is that we are committing to a strategy and do not have that frustration of playing random numbers and not hitting on that number you bet the last three spins but then did not bet this time. To date, we have never had 36 rolls without a number repeating. We have always come out ahead. Sometimes we have had to make 30+ bets before the repeater, but it has always happened. This is not a statistically good strategy, but one that keeps you sane. And when you do get a repeater, you win big. Hopefully, it happens for you early in your session. And when it does happen, we do one more spin, this time doubling the bet. We have hit this multiple times (a three-peat). We have yet to have a four-peat. This strategy, along with making 50/50 bets, is our recommended way to play roulette. It also keeps you in the game longer.
